MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno “Pnoy” Aquino III inaugurated the country’s first and biggest solar power plant in San Carlos City in the Negros Occidental province.

The solar farm is operated by the San Carlos Solar Energy Inc., and has started operations on Thursday, May 15th. The project is a joint venture between the local clean energy developer, Bronzeoak Philippines and leading global investment management group, ThomasLloyd.

Aquino has urged developers Bronzeoak Philippines and Swiss-German firm Thomas Lloyd to also invest and put up solar power plants in other parts of central and southern Philippines where electricity remains a problem for many provinces due to scarcity of power facilities in the two regions.

The solar power plant – located at the San Carlos Economic Zone – has a capacity to produce at least 22 megawatts of electricity that would benefit many households and industries in the region.

Jose Maria Zabaleta, chairman of the power plant, said they are working on four additional facilities in San Carlos which would be operation next year. The new solar plant in Negros Occidental expected to meet power demand and reduce CO2 emissions in Visayas.
